Stephanie Powell was born on a navy base in Yokosuka, Japan, in 1972 and was raised in Portland, Oregon. She
obtained her undergraduate degree at University of Oregon, Eugene where she studied Journalism and Photography.
After leaving Oregon in 1999, she traveled throughout Southeast Asia to learn Japan's relationship with other Asian
countries. Those experiences and learnings have manifested in her most recent work.
She received her Masters degree from the School of the Art Institute of Chicago in 2001 where she later taught in the Photography program. Stephanie is currently a Visiting Professor at Pratt Institute and is living and working in
Brooklyn, New York.
Stephanie is interested in the sublime moments within cultural absorption, entropy and displacement.
Her work is also influenced by the ghosts of colonial history.
